The concept of aggression in poker is extremely well documented and is understood by most poker players. Even poker players who are very inexperienced will tend to see situations within their own games where betting or raising with a very weak hand is the correct play to make. So even if you never read a poker book or visited a coaching website in your life, you will still be aware of times when aggressive poker will work to your advantage.
Aggression in poker is one of the most critical elements of successful play. But yet I do feel that it’s importance is overestimated by many people and often numerous articles that speak of aggression in poker tend to create a false picture in the minds of numerous players. I always feel that the task of becoming a balanced player is a very demanding one.
This is because I feel it is all too easy to slip into destructive patterns where you are essentially doing something too often. In poker you do not want to be doing anything with too high a frequency and doing so will invariably lose money. For instance if you fold too much, or if you raise too much, or maybe you re-raise too much etc, in short anything that you do too much around the poker table will likely be destructive to your overall bottom line.
But I often feel that aggression in poker can be very rewarding if you are sitting in games with weak players. I think that the online poker environment has changed substantially over the past few years. I think the emergence of all round poker knowledge coupled with the ability to play multiple tables online and to also achieve rakeback has driven players into playing in a certain style.
At the end of the day poker is played by people and people have emotions and this is definitely the case where money is concerned. What this also means is that timid and cautious people are also attracted to the game of poker. To be honest there are many players who play the game who are not really suited for becoming successful poker players. There is absolutely nothing wrong in this of course because at the end of the day, it is played by millions of people worldwide for lots of different reasons.
People simply do not have to play poker in order to make money, people can play poker to perhaps relieve themselves of boredom or maybe to simply meet friends or even to make friends. What this indicates is that an awful lot of people play either online poker or in live casinos simply for entertainment value and nothing else. These people see winning as nothing more than a bonus and not as the main objective.
But yet when these people play at low stakes they are part of the natural food chain that puts them either at the bottom or near the bottom. This means that aggressive poker is often extremely successful against weak timid players and this is even more so in full ring games.
This is where I think many players go wrong, they understand the value of aggressive play and undertake to play aggressive poker in any situation they can find. But yet playing aggressive poker can be a terrible handicap as unskilled players simply do not have the experience to know what they are doing so aggressive play will only serve to put more money into action. Aggression is important but it really should be put into perspective along with other equally important poker skills.
